Mutagenesis 2000
A wearable art (in collaboration with a friend) designed in response to our intense concerns about where genetic meddling might lead.
An orchid provided inspiration for the design, not just because of its beauty and shapes but also because of the parasitic nature of orchids. At the time, we were reading about how experiments were being performed on mice and rats to grow human body parts and there was much debate around genetically modified seeds and crops.……. So, here we are and nobody seems to have any idea what’s going on, or should I say, those that know, are going to great lengths to keep the truth and extent of ‘meddling’, from being revealed.
This award winning creation was in the WOW shows in Nelson, New Zealand and then purchased by the WOW company to be exhibited in their WOW Museum in Nelson & to appear in touring exhibitions around the world.
This creation was followed with another one, ‘Gene Genie’ in 2001, which I made with my husband. This one was also exhibited and toured. Some of us artists did try to raise the alarm about genetic meddling.
Gene Genie - Wearable Art I created this with my husband in 2001
‘now that the genie is out of the bottle………………………’ was the message
